Vasileios P. Latinos, Greece (graduate 2009)

I graduated from the Urban Management Program in 2009 and during the last ten years I have devoted my career to projects on urban resilience and climate change adaptation mainly. At the moment, I am working as Senior Officer for Urban Resilience and Climate Adaptation at the European Secretariat of ICLEI Local Governments for Sustainability in Freiburg, Germany.

I am responsible for implementing applied research projects in the topical areas of climate change adaptation, urban resilience and green infrastructure, as well as supporting the strategic and programmatic development of ICLEI Europe in this field. I am also working with service contracts for clients such as the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the German Environment Agency, while since 2016, I am responsible for the organisation and programme development of the annual European Urban Resilience Forum. In late 2019, I was the winner of the DIN Innovators Award 2019 for the chairing and development of the CWA 17300 City Resilience Development: Operational Guidance, which intends to support cities in becoming more resilient against various kinds of threats.

The Urban Management program has provided me with the necessary training and very important insights on sustainable urban development that I am using throughout my career!

Carissa Champlin, United States (graduate 2008)

The UMS Program is strategically crafted to provide students a solid foundation of urban studies theory combined with practical aspects of routine city management in the international context. The experience of consulting in cooperation with the GIZ in Aleppo, Syria, provided me exciting hands-on experience and a window into my future career.

As a PhD candidate my research is focused on the collaborative design of planning support systems, which are GIS-based technologies. I do so in part by developing customizable serious games that ease users into the adoption of these sophisticated computer technologies.

The exposure to ideas and access to an international community experts provided by UMS helped me to position myself within the European conversation on sustainable cities.

Samuel Soloman, United States (graduate 2013)

With a background in leadership and higher education, I was a unique admit to the Urban Management program at TU Berlin. My coursework and practical experience throughout the UM program provided an exceptional foundation in the areas of governance, participatory planning, and urban development. Following my thesis work on land management in Oman with Professor Dr. Nebel, I assumed work on a UN-Habitat project on emerging cities and more recently returned to the academic sector through the Center for Creative Leadership (CCL) in the US.

I am privileged to be immersed in meaningful work developing strategies and initiatives to facilitate executive level leadership training and capacity building for youth, such as a GIZ partnership in Addis Ababa to develop capacity of local community change-makers.

The UM program was the right blend of theoretical foundations and hands-on practicum. I was fortunate to meet, study, and work alongside bright students from around the world who contributed daily with insights from their diverse and rich professional backgrounds and unique experiences. These students, along with the excellent faculty, have enriched my professional development and deepened my understanding of urban issues, strategies, and prospects in a truly significant way.
